Hysteroscopy Q & A

What is a hysteroscopy?

A hysteroscopy at CARE Fertility is a medical procedure allowing your specialist to view the inside of your uterus to diagnose or treat conditions that may be causing bothersome symptoms or infertility. They insert a lighted, thin tube into your vagina to examine your cervix and the inside of your uterus. Your provider can remove fibroids, polyps, adhesions, and more.

Diagnostic hysteroscopies identify irregularities contributing to infertility problems or other concerns, while operative hysteroscopies treat abnormalities linked to gynecological problems, particularly abnormal uterine bleeding. You can typically complete a diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy during the same visit.

Which conditions can a hysteroscopy diagnose and treat?

Undergoing a hysteroscopy at CARE Fertility allows your provider to diagnose and treat the following concerns when necessary:

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Spotting between periods
  • Other types of irregular menstrual bleeding
  • Polyps
  • Fibroids
  • Adhesions (scar tissue in the uterus)
  • Uterine irregularities

The procedure can help diagnose the cause of miscarriages, infertility, and much more.

Am I a candidate for a hysteroscopy?

The CARE Fertility experts discuss your symptoms and medical history to determine if a hysteroscopy is right for you. They complete a physical exam, including a pelvic exam, and may suggest lab work or additional diagnostic testing.

You’re not a candidate for a hysteroscopy if you’re pregnant or have a pelvic infection. If you have regular periods, your provider may recommend you schedule a hysteroscopy the first week after the bleeding stops to allow the best view of the inside of your uterus.

Tell your fertility specialist about any medications you take, including dietary supplements. You might need to stop taking them before the procedure or make arrangements for someone to drive you home after your hysteroscopy.

What can I expect during a hysteroscopy?

Before the procedure, you’ll change into a hospital gown and empty your bladder. Your provider offers anesthesia or a sedative to relax you. Your specialist completes a pelvic exam, dilates your cervix, and inserts a hysteroscope through your vagina and cervix to view your uterus, fallopian tubes, and uterine lining. They remove or repair any abnormalities if necessary.

Your procedure might last 5-60 minutes, sometimes longer. Afterward, you may experience temporary light bleeding or cramping for a few days. Your CARE Fertility provider discusses the results with you and determines if you’re a candidate for further testing or treatment.
