Embryo Donation Q & A

What is embryo donation?

Embryo donation at CARE Fertility has been available since 1990. This program provides access to donated embryos, which are fertilized eggs formed into embryos in an in vitro fertilization (IVF) lab. These embryos are frozen and stored for future use or donated to other individuals who haven’t been able to become pregnant but desire to start a family.

What are the benefits of embryo donation?

The benefits of embryo donation at CARE Fertility include:

  • No need for continued storage of unused embryos
  • No destroying unwanted embryos
  • Ability for infertile couples to have a baby
  • Cost savings for couples receiving donated embryos
  • Hope and joy for couples struggling with infertility

The donated embryos contain a normal number of chromosomes and are of good to excellent quality. They’re tested for quality prior to being available as donations.

Am I a candidate to receive an embryo donation?

The CARE Fertility experts meet with you to determine if you’re a candidate for receiving an embryo donation. You’re required to make a non-refundable deposit. The fertility experts encourage you and your partner to complete an evaluation before embryo selection.

CARE Fertility also recommends you complete a consultation with a psychologist or licensed therapist regarding donated embryos, as well as baseline blood work and a medical exam to evaluate your overall health. If you aren’t able to carry a baby, you may arrange for surrogacy via CARE Fertility. Donated embryos are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Which medical services are included with embryo donations?

The following services are included when you’re selected to receive donor embryos:

  • Baseline bloodwork
  • Sonograms
  • IVF lab (embryo thaw and embryo transfer)
  • Embryo transfer by a physician
  • Pregnancy test
  • Medications for the donor embryo transfer cycle: Estrace (oral estrogen), progesterone intramuscular injection, and Valium on the day of an embryo transfer

If you change your mind about receiving an embryo donation before the frozen donor embryo cycle is complete, you may receive a partial refund. Contact the CARE Fertility office at any time with questions throughout the process or if you’re interested in other infertility treatments or donating your unused embryos to a couple in need.
