Struggling to Conceive? How a Semen Analysis Can Uncover Hidden Answers
If you’re having trouble getting pregnant, several tools can help determine the potential cause. A semen analysis is a simple, important test that can evaluate sperm health and help find factors that may affect your fertility.

When you’re trying to conceive, you may automatically assume that your difficulties are due to the person carrying the baby. But infertility can affect either partner, or a combination of factors that affects both. In fact, male factors contribute to about half of all infertility cases.

At CARE Fertility in Bedford and Fort Worth, Texas, our specialists understand how both partners can affect chances of conception, and we do a complete evaluation of both that includes semen analysis. This relatively simple test provides important information about sperm and can uncover problems that may not cause obvious symptoms.

What does a semen analysis check?

Examining a sample of semen, the fluid that carries sperm, evaluates characteristics that may affect fertility. The semen analysis looks at:

  • Sperm count
  • Sperm concentration
  • Motility
  • Morphology
  • Semen volume

The number, function, and shape of sperm can significantly affect male fertility. We may also look for signs of inflammation, infection, or other abnormalities that can affect how sperm functions.

Why is this test important?

Some sperm-related fertility problems don’t cause obvious symptoms. Your male partner can feel healthy and have a strong sex drive but still have a low sperm count, poor motility, or other sperm abnormalities.

A semen analysis can help us determine whether male factors are making it more challenging for you to conceive. The results can also help guide the next steps in your fertility evaluation and treatment plan.

One abnormal result doesn’t mean you can’t father a child. Sperm production can fluctuate, and we may repeat the semen analysis to confirm the findings.

What happens during semen analysis?

When collecting and analyzing semen, the clinic gives you specific instructions on how to prepare for the diagnostic test, including how long you need to abstain from ejaculation before the analysis as it may lead to inaccurate results.

Because the test evaluates sperm at a particular point in time, your fertility specialist may recommend additional testing depending on your results and medical history.

What if results are abnormal?

An abnormal semen analysis doesn’t mean that pregnancy is impossible. Depending on the findings, we may recommend lifestyle changes, additional testing, or medications to improve chances of fertilization. We may even refer you to a male fertility specialist for expert help.

Male infertility treatments are also an option if your results are abnormal. If your sperm motility is poor, for example, we may suggest intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF).
