Family Building For Lesbian Couples

Lesbian couple with child on beach

CARE Fertility is committed to assisting lesbian couples who desire their own biological children. Successful pregnancy depends on many factors, so an initial work up will be performed  prior to treatment to evaluate the potential for conception and to select the optimal treatment plan for each patient.

For lesbian women, the options for conception include:

  • Intrauterine insemination (IUI) with donor sperm, with or without the use of fertility-enhancing medications.  The insemination process itself is simple: A small, flexible tube is placed through the cervix, which deposits the processed semen sample into the womb. Most women report minimal cramping, or often no pain at all during/after the IUI. Because timing is very important throughout the IUI process, CARE is open for appointments seven days a week.
  • IVF with donor sperm. IVF (in vitro fertilization) is fertilization of eggs outside the body, in the laboratory The embryos created in this process are then transferred to the uterus several days later. IVF is an alternative to intrauterine insemination (IUI) if there is a low chance of pregnancy with IUI. In an IVF treatment cycle, one partner would provide the eggs and also carry the pregnancy.
  • Partner IVF with donor sperm. Partner IVF is an option where both female partners are involved in the process. One partner provides the eggs, which are fertilized with donor sperm outside of the body, in the laboratory. The resulting embryos are then transferred to the other partner, who will carry the pregnancy.

Donor Sperm

Lesbian couple with childTreatment with donor sperm involves the use of sperm that has been anonymously donated through a commercial sperm bank. The sperm has been previously frozen and tested to rule out the presence of infectious diseases. Information about a donor's physical characteristics, race, ethnic and educational backgrounds, career history and general health should be available. CARE Fertility adheres to FDA regulations, as well as the recommendations of ASRM (American Society of Reproductive Medicine). We have a health psychologist on staff to meet with patients regarding third-party reproduction.
