Timing Ovulation to Increase Chances of Conception

By CARE Fertility on January 22, 2016

Illustration of a female egg oocyteMany soon-to-be parents begin their journey to parenthood with the idea that they’ll start attempting to conceive a child and, within a month or two, will be proudly announcing their pregnancy. However, this is not always the case. Instead, many couples find themselves frustrated when, after several months of trying, they have yet to conceive. In many cases, there are underlying causes that may require fertility treatment to increase the chance of a successful pregnancy. However, for some couples, the solution may be as simple as timing ovulation correctly. The truth is that a large number of women are unfamiliar with the pattern of their menstrual cycle, and many others just don’t know which part of the cycle is the ideal time to conceive. The fertility doctors at CARE Fertility offer tips on properly timing ovulation to our Fort Worth, TX patients to see if this simple step can help couples conceive without undergoing further fertility testing or treatment.

Tips for Timing Ovulation

For women who don’t already do so, the first step of timing ovulation is for women to begin tracking their menstrual cycle. Each month, keep track of when the menstrual cycle starts and ends, and how many days each cycle is (counting the first day of the cycle as the day that menstruation begins, and the last day of the cycle being the day before the next period begins). Generally, ovulation begins about two weeks prior to a woman’s next expected menstrual cycle, so, if a woman has a 28-day cycle, ovulation should occur at day 14 of that cycle. If a woman’s cycle is irregular, there are other steps that can be helpful in tracking ovulation, including the following:

  • Take note of body changes, particularly changes in the vagina’s mucus. Clear, slippery mucus is generally a sign of ovulation.
  • Keep track of the basal body temperature. This temperature typically rises by about half a degree following ovulation.
  • Use an ovulation predictor kit. A positive test result indicates that ovulation will occur in the next 24 to 36 hours.

Timing ovulation is important because if lets couples know the ideal times to have sex in order to increase the chance of conception. Each woman has a fertile window; this window includes the six days leading up to ovulation, as well as the day of ovulation. Within this window, the most fertile days are the three days leading up to and including ovulation. By having unprotected intercourse during this fertile window, a woman has up to a 33 percent chance of conceiving.

Fertility Treatment

Despite tracking ovulation, many women still have a difficult time becoming pregnant. There are a number of male- and female-related infertility problems that can make conception highly improbable. In these cases, the doctors at CARE Fertility can diagnose the most likely cause of infertility and offer a number of effective fertility treatments. We offer a complete range of treatment options, including the following:

  • Intrauterine insemination (IUI)
  • In vitro fertilization (IVF)
  • Egg donation

Our doctors will be happy to discuss any of these treatments in further detail to help our patients find a fertility solution that works for them.
