Causes of Infertility
01:13
Here, Dr. Kathy discusses various causes of infertility.
Semen Analysis
00:51
Computer-assisted semen analysis is one method we use to diagnose infertility.
Hormonal Testing
01:02
Pituitary and ovarian hormones affect a woman's reproductive ability.
Pelvic Sonography
01:18
Pelvic sonography can identify anatomical problems that may cause infertility.
Hysterosalpingogram
00:53
A hysterosalpingogram is used to detect obstructions in the fallopian tubes.
PGD
01:19
Preimplantation genetic diagnosis allows us to screen embryos for abnormalities.
Pelvic sonography is a very useful tool for infertility. Initially its purpose is to diagnose anatomical problems, so issues such as benign tumors of the uterus, cyst of the ovary are very common in infertility and could be easily assessed by ultrasound. Other anatomical problems of the uterus are more subtle, but our 3D ultrasound technology does allow us to make accurate determinations in most cases. Ultrasonography is also very important in the management of infertility or the fertility treatments because the ultrasound is used as a tool to determine the response of fertility drugs, so again we have to be able to individualize and adjust the treatments within a cycle. We need to be able to know whether the dosage needs to be increased or decreased and so we need to be able to determine how fast the follicles, the eggs within the ovary are maturing. We also need to be able to make an accurate assessment of when the eggs are likely to be mature, so we know when to trigger ovulation or we know when to time the egg retrieval for in vitro fertilization.
